Recap[]

Steve and Blue are going to the beach and while we are there, we decide what clothes would be most appropriate to wear to the beach. The letter he receives from Mailbox is about swimming practice at the pool with kids and the teachers and experiment with physics in a game of sink and float with Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper. Then, we help sea creatures find their way back to the playground by matching their shapes with the coral reef under the sea. Blue decides to go on a picnic. The clues were a basket, a blanket, and a sandwich. Steve thought Blue wanted to bury a sandwich and a basket in the sand and cover it up with the blanket. That did not make any sense. Steve thought Blue wanted to put the sandwich in the basket. Then she would have a sandwich in a basket and a blanket. If they sit on the blanket and eat the sandwich, then they would have a picnic lunch. Blue wanted to bring a picnic lunch to the beach with a basket to carry everything, a blanket to sit on, and sandwiches to eat. They just figured out Blue’s Clues.

Trivia[]

  • In this episode, coordinating producer Penelope Jewkes and Cecilia Gonzalez, who is the relative of future senior animator Dayna Gonzalez, are also friends of Steve.
  • Steve invites the viewers to help him get ready for a trip to the beach. He takes off his goggles and his appearance is updated to match his look from previous episodes. The starfish from a previous episode makes a cameo appearance in the living room picture. The beach location from a previous episode is used again in this episode.
  • During the search for Blue, there is background music that resembles the music from the movie Jaws. The ball found on the beach is similar to Blue's ball. A coloring book inspired by this episode was released in 1998.
  • Several firsts occur in this episode, including Steve being on the right side during the Mailtime song, the kids saying "Bye!" instead of "Bye, Steve!", and the introduction of new sound effects like the telephone pick-up sound and knocking sound. This happened earlier in Snack Time starring Morgan, Perry, and Brent and the girl who said, "Those are my favorite times.". This will happen again later in What Is Blue Trying to Do? said by the boys, Signs, where the boy will say, "Have a wonderful day." after "Good morning, Blue!" is the last thing the kids do, Occupations, where the composer, musicians, and vocalist will join the reporter girl who says, "Back to you, Steve.", and The Alphabet Train, where Zoe will wave goodbye by signing off by herself prompting Joe to copy her.
  • This episode marks the last time Steve's voice is higher-pitched and more excited before it becomes slightly deeper and calmer in the next episode. However, his voice would still go back to being high pitched for the rest of the episodes in the first season.
  • The use of fish in the Nick Jr. logo at the end of the episode is a new addition, along with Blue's reaction when a wrong answer is given.
    • Additionally, the line "It's a Clue!" is introduced by Kathryn Avery, who was Ticketys original voice actress. This line will be used in future episodes. Dave Palmer is credited as the animation director for the first time in this episode.
    • Lastly, this episode features a food item as a clue for the first time, with the third clue being a sandwich.
  • In this episode, Steve does not say, "Bye!" at all. This will happen again later in Occupations where he will say, "Fascinating story.".
  • This is the first episode to feature a sink/float experiment. This will happen again later in What Experiment Does Blue Want to Try?.

Goofs[]

  • When Steve walks to the fish tank, the table it's on has it's legs cut off.
  • Despite Mrs. Pepper knocking the cup over, it doesn't seem to be filling up with water and then sinking to the bottom of the sink.
  • When Blue sings The So Long Song with Steve, her swimsuit gets taken off.
  • In the TV version, Sidetable Drawer says, "Blue's Clues, I'm so excited!" and Steve gets his notebook coming from the left side of the house. But in the VHS version, Sidetable Drawer doesn't say, "Blue's Clues, I'm so excited!" before she corrects it and Steve gets his notebook coming from the right side of the house.
  • When Steve finishes singing "We Just Got a Letter", a studio equipment shows in upper right side of the screen.
  • After Steve draws the third clue (a sandwich), the pawprint is still seen on the sandwich.
  • At the end, when Steve leaves the beach, part of his body gets cut off.
  • When Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper go to the beach, they just appear as if they were not going.
  • Blue's barking is muted in several versions of this episode, including Italian, French, German, Dutch, American Korean, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, and Malay.
