This theme only plays during the seasons with Steve as the host of the show, which are the first four seasons although Joe did show up in the last two episodes of season four before Steve's departure from the series. For the last two seasons with Joe as the host, it was replaced by Another Blue's Clues Day. The first few notes from the beginning of the song can be heard as Steve’s ringtone on Josh's phone in the Blue's Clues & You! premiere episode "Meet Josh!". The intro starts with seven books, Goodnight Moon, The Runaway Bunny, The Little House, Madeline, Corduroy, Curious George, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, but the Eighth book is a yellow square-shaped book with the Blue's Clues logo on it, and it opens up by itself, where the viewer arrives at the house, with Steve usually shouting out, greeting the viewers and asking where Blue is, whereas she hides in a different spot. On rare occasions, when the episode starts outside beginning with Nature, Blue doesn't hide. In some others such as "Blue's Big Musical", she doesn't appear at all until after the opening.

Trivia[]
- Besides the Blue's Clues book, the other books at the very beginning of the sequence are, clockwise starting from the top:
- Goodnight Moon: Written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd
- The Runaway Bunny: Written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd
- Madeline: Written and illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans
- The Little House: Written and illustrated by Virginia Lee Burton
- Corduroy: Written and illustrated by Don Freeman
- Curious George: Written and illustrated by H.A. Rey
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar: Written and illustrated by Eric Carle
- In the opening sequence pre-season 4, Steve always had his Early-Season 1 hair in the right house window.
- This opening sequence received minor changes in Season 4, with instead of Shovel and Pail appearing behind the Blue's Clues house, they appear close to Mailbox while he is throwing Blue's ball, which is then followed by Periwinkle jumping and laughing with the ball, and finally Magenta carrying it in her wagon before Blue goes through the door flap to start each episode.
- In the opening sequence of most episodes before Season 4, Mailbox's post was purple even after it was changed to black starting with "A Snowy Day".
- In the earliest episodes of the original series, part of the music for this sequence was played before The So Long Song.
- The opening sequence was interrupted in "Blue's Big Treasure Hunt" when Mailbox announced that it's already mail time and the episode starts prematurely.
- In seasons 5 and 6 (Joe seasons), the original sequence is replaced with Another Blue's Clues Day.
- The book opens by itself in this version with Blue already in it, which makes more sense at the end compared to Another Blue's Clues Day.
- In a few episodes, the background is slightly different to fit the season or time.
- In What's That Sound?, Thankful, Blue's Big Mystery, Blue's Big Costume Party, Blue's Collection, and Stormy Weather, the tree's leaves are recolored to fit the fall season, and Blue hides behind a pile of leaves with pumpkins by the front porch.
- In Blue's Big Holiday, the tree is leafless to fit the winter season, and Blue hides behind a bush.
- In Blue's Big Pajama Party, the background is dusk since it was nighttime with fireflies.
- In What Does Blue Want to Do on a Rainy Day?, the intro becomes cloudy, and the viewer rings the doorbell. The sound of it distracts Steve for a little bit before he finally opens the door.
- In Blue's Birthday, it has the house decked with party decorations, and Blue wearing her party hat while singing The Birthday Song.
- In What Does Blue Want to Do with Her Picture?, Steve forgets to open the door after the intro.
- In The Wrong Shirt, Steve wears a tan shirt and green-striped pants, signifying that something is a little off.
- In Steve Goes to College, both Steve and Joe greet the viewer.
- In Nature, Periwinkle Misses His Friend, Blue's Big Musical, Prehistoric Blue, The Anything Box, Adventure, What's New, Blue?, Bugs!, ¡Un Día Con Plum!, Blue's Backyard Ballgame Bonanza, Let's Plant, and Joe Gets a Clue, neither Steve nor Blue are present; therefore, the intro is just completely instrumental and zooms straight to the house without anyone saying anything.
- However, in The Baby's Here! and Making Changes, despite Steve not appearing through the window, voices can slightly be heard right when the screen reaches the door before Steve opens it, also, Mailbox can be seen tossing with his flag, even though Blue did not have her ball with her.
